Social Justice, Environmentalism, and Your Local Church

Social Justice, Environmentalism, and Your Local Church This post from the The Resurgence Website has links to two documents that I plan to study extensively. One is Oxford Declaration on Christian Faith and Economics and the other is Cornwall Declaration on Environmental Stewardship. By their titles, you can see they are tackling the issues related to the church's role in areas such as environmentalism and social justice. Obviously, these are areas the conservative Christian church has not particularly stood out in the last ten years (roughly the onset of "the religious right" or "moral majority") due to false expectations placed on the political system to accomplish the mission God gave to the church. These documents should serve as a starting point to continue fighting for these just causes, but give more of a biblical foundation and practice less aligned (at least in appearance) to the political system of the West.

Environmentalism

Thanks for this post and the links. As a Christian who is both biblical and environmental, I am often told that I am a liberal or a progressive (as if that is a bad thing!). This issue is far too politcal--we need to heed the word of God on this and read what HE has told us about being stewards of this creation. A good recent book is "Love Your Neighbor: Thinking Wisely About Right and Wrong." The fact that it is written by Norman Geisler (a conservative) is all the more refreshing. Hopefully we can move forward as the church and be at the forefront of taking care of our planet--without resorting to the labels associated with it. Thanks again for the post. Check out the book--a great read on biblical ethics: http://www.amazon.com/Love-Your-Neighbor-Thinking-Wisely/dp/1581349459/r...

Geisler on ecology and social justice

A surprising feature in his new book 'Love Your Neighbor: Thinking Wisely About Right and Wrong' are his chapters on ecology and social justice (not to mention a chapter on war and civil disobedience). Not your usual evangelical subjects but he handles them biblically and without partisanship. Check it out: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/102-2085712-9684969?initialSearch=1...
