Wow. This quote is from a blog I mentioned previously that is written by an athiest who goes to various Christian events and gives his reaction. Regardless of the fact that he will obviously not be impressed with Benny Hinn, some of what he wrote is truly astounding. Particularly, the threat if the people do not give money.
He asked each person to donate a thousand dollars to the church as a “seed for the harvest”. A thousand dollars was the magic number which seemed very convenient, there was no explanation as to why it was a thousand dollars, just that it was an even number large enough to please Jesus. And then came the fear. He told the crowd that he sensed a woman at the back had a son who was about to get married and that if she did not donate a thousand dollars in the sons name “his marriage would end in a terrible, messy divorce”. I was floored, he has absolutely no write to ask for that money let only say such hateful manipulative things from a position of power. But it worked, once again they came up to the front in droves cheque book in hand, he asked for three hundred people to donate for friends and family as well as themselves and I am sure he reached that goal. Without the rest of the crowd that was a profit of at least 600,000 dollars a petrifying amount to be given to such immoral practices. He used long words to manipulate the crowd using what seemed like logic, I listened to his words and boy was he crafty, I was impressed. I didn’t have a notebook with me this time because I really didn’t want to stick out like a sore thumb, so I can’t give you direct quotes but I am sure Sabrina will as there were some really good ones. He talked with such confidence and using such language that upon a quick glance his words seemed rational and enticing and thus was the key to his success. When it came time to ask for the actual donations he was really adamant about the time it took to collect the money. he became heated and stressed. Sabrina and I looked at each other and commented on what we were witnessing, he knew he had pulled the wool over their eyes but also knew his arguments wouldn’t stand up against the scrutiny of time. He hurried everyone to the front and the ushers to the aisles so that no one would come to their senses before the money left tier hands. The panicky change in his demeanor showed his disbelief in his own preaching, he knew he was spewing falsities and was attempting to run away with the money before the people came back to reality. We used the chaos of the collection to slip out as we had been sitting there for well over three hours already; we both felt we had seen enough to fully understand what the ministry was about. The answer of course was money.
